“We are more than a congregation—we are a vibrant, living testament to God’s transformative power. Each prayer we offer, each act of kindness we extend, and each moment we share in fellowship strengthens our community and furthers our mission.”

Pastor Chineta Goodjoin

Someone said to me this morning, “How do you handle the varying needs of the church? From the people to the physical plant, it seems that you could get pulled in many directions at once.” My response was that oftentimes I do, and things get prioritized according to the urgency of the need. While my call certainly includes teaching, preaching the word, celebrating communion and baptism, and being a pastoral presence for those who are suffering, I know that the church must be cared for by the people. It thrives through the gathering of believers who trust in God and use their collective prayers, money, and time to support the ministries and mission in the community and world. It is all of us—elders, deacons, members and supporters who help to make a difference.

I believe that New Hope Church exists to embody the love of Jesus Christ as we seek to advocate for the oppressed and bring justice to those who face marginalization. Even more, the connectional nature of the Presbyterian denomination invites us to be in relationship with our sister churches. What makes it work for me personally is knowing that I am not alone in handling the various needs of our church. In John 14:12-14, Jesus clearly prepares the disciples to take on the world and boldly build the kingdom of God, saying,

“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

This assurance allows us to lean on God as we realize that every member plays a crucial role in our mission. We are more than a congregation—we are a vibrant, living testament to God’s transformative power. Each prayer we offer, each act of kindness we extend, and each moment we share in fellowship strengthens our community and furthers our mission. Together, with hearts united in Christ’s love and hands ready to serve, we can overcome any obstacle and make a lasting impact on our community and beyond. Let us go forth, confident in our collective strength and unwavering faith, to build the kingdom of God and bring His light into every corner of the world.
